Caring For Houseplants In The Summer Months
Mae’r haf yn amser gwych i blanhigion dan do, ond dyma hefyd yr amser y maen nhw angen y sylw mwyaf. Rhowch yr haf gorau erioed iddyn nhw.
Rydyn ni yn y misoedd poethaf a heulogaf o’r flwyddyn (gobeithio). Mae hynny’n golygu amodau tyfu gwych i’ch planhigion, cyn belled â’u bod nhw’n cael eu dyfrio’n dda. Dyma sut i’w helpu i fwynhau’r haf.
Summer is a great time for indoor plants, but it’s also the time they need the most attention. Give them the best summer ever.
We’re in the hottest, sunniest months of the year (hopefully). That means great growing conditions for your plants, as long as they’re kept well watered. Here’s how to help them enjoy summer.

Dyfrio’n fwy aml
Mae’n debyg y bydd angen i chi ddyfrio’ch planhigion yn amlach yn yr haf. Nid yn unig ydi nhw’n yfed mwy i’w helpu i dyfu, gall y tywydd poeth sychu eu pridd yn gyflymach.
Edrychwch arnynt bob cwpl o ddiwrnodau a rhowch ddiod iddynt dim ond pan fydd y pridd yn teimlo’n sych i ddyfnder o ddwy fodfedd. Peidiwch â chael eich temtio i or-ddyfrio. Nid yw pridd gwlyb sych yn dda i blanhigyn.
Bwydwch nhw’n gyson
Mae planhigion yn dal i fod ymhell i fewn y tymor tyfu (mae’n para tan fis Medi), felly mae angen llawer o egni arnyn nhw i wneud dail a blodau newydd.
Unwaith y mis – dim mwy na hynny – rhowch fwyd planhigion, sef gwrtaith, yn y can dyfrio a dyfriwch eich planhigion fel arfer. Bydd hynny’n rhoi’r maeth maent eu hangen iddyn nhw.
Water more frequently
You’ll probably need to water your plants more in summer. Not only are they drinking more to help them grow, the hot weather can dry their soil out quickly.
Check on them every couple of days and give them a drink only when the soil feels dry to a depth of two inches. Don’t be tempted to overwater. Sopping wet soil is not a plant’s friend.
Keep them well fed
Plants are still well within the growing season (it lasts until September), so they need lots of energy to make new leaves and flowers.
Once a month – no more than that – put some plant food, aka fertiliser, in the watering can and water your plants as normal. That will give them the nutrients they need.

Cadwch yr aer yn llaith
Gwnewch yr aer poeth yn llaith a bydd eich planhigion yn hynod hapus. Y ffordd hawsaf o wneud hyn yw rhoi dwr iddynt gyda chwistrellwr bob dydd.
Gallech hefyd roi pot eich planhigyn ar hambwrdd wedi’i lenwi â cherrig mân a dŵr. Neu eu rhoi mewn ystafell ymolchi lle mae llaith naturiol.
Symudwch nhw allan o haul llawn
Mae rhai planhigion sy’n caru haul cryf, cacti yn bennaf, ond mae’r rhan fwyaf yn ei chael hi’n ormod. Fel ni, gallant losgi.
Os yw eich planhigion mewn ystafell lachar iawn, ystyriwch eu symud i ffwrdd o ffenestri, fel nad yw haul canol dydd yn tywynnu arnyn nhw.
Keep the air humid
Make the hot air moist and your plants will be incredibly happy. The easiest way to do this is to give them a spritz with a mister every day.
You could also put your plant’s pot on a tray filled with pebbles and water. Or put them in a naturally humid bathroom.
Move them out of direct sunlight
There are some plants that love strong direct sun, mostly cacti, but most find it a bit much. Like us, they can burn.
If your plants are in a very bright room, consider moving them away from a window, so the midday sun doesn’t shine on them.

Mynd ar gwyliau?
Peidiwch ag anghofio paratoi eich planhigion tŷ ar gyfer eich amser i ffwrdd hefyd! Os byddwch yn absennol am gyfnod byr yn ystod yr haf, efallai y bydd dyfrio planhigion yn drylwyr cyn mynd i ffwrdd yn ddigon ond efallai y bydd angen mwy ar gyfer cyfnodau hirach.
Mae yna lawer o wahanol ffyrdd i ofalu am eich planhigion tŷ tra rydych chi i ffwrdd, o’r dull wic i ddefnyddio matiau capilari neu hyd yn oed rhywbeth mor syml â gorchuddio’ch planhigion.
Felly os ydych chi’n trafelio’r haf hwn, cliciwch yma i fynd draw i’n tudalen newyddion i ddarganfod sut i gadw’ch planhigion yn hapus tra rydych chi allan yn mwynhau’ch teithiau!
Going on holiday?
Don’t forget to prepare your houseplants for your time away too! In the case of short absences during the summer, giving plants a thorough watering before going away may be sufficient but longer breaks may require something more.
There are many different methods for supporting your houseplants while you’re away, from the wick method to using capillary matting or even something as simple as covering your plants.

Problemau a achosi’r gan dywydd poeth
Mae tywydd poeth a sych yr haf yn cyflymu cylchoedd bywyd plâu, gan ganiatáu iddynt luosi’n gyflym. Mae’r plâu planhigion tŷ haf mwyaf cyffredin yn cynnwys gwiddon pry cop, a phryfed melys.
Sut i adnabod y plau fwyaf cyffredin
Gwiddon Pry Cop: Mae’r arachnidau bach hyn yn ffynnu mewn aer poeth, sych. Chwiliwch am we mân rhwng y dail a golwg sal ar y dail.
Thrips: Mae’r pryfed hynod gyflym, main hyn yn tyllu dail i sugno sudd, gan achosi dail diflas, ariannaidd, ac yn effeithio twf newydd.
Pryfed Melys: Mae’r rhain yn ymddangos fel clystyrau gwyn, blewog tebyg i gotwm, yn aml yn cuddio yng ngheilliau’r dail ac ar hyd coesynnau. Maent yn gollwng sylwedd gludiog o’r enw “gwlith mêl,” a all arwain at fowld ar y planhigyn.
Atebion
Ynyswch unrhyw blanhigion gyda plâu ar unwaith i atal nhw rhag lledaenu i’ch casgliad iach o blanhigion.
Triniaethau Targedig
Gwiddon Pry Cop: Sychwch ochrau isaf y dail gyda lliain llaith a rhoi sebon pryfleiddol neu olew neem wedi’i wanhau arnynt.
Pryfed Melys: Trochwch swab cotwm mewn alcohol rhwbio a’i dapio’n uniongyrchol ar y pryfed.
Thrips: Chwistrellwch y planhigyn cyfan yn drylwyr â dŵr llugoer i olchi trips a larfae oedolion i ffwrdd.
Gofal Ataliol
Gwiriwch y planhigion ac o dan y dail yn wythnosol. Sychwch y llwch gyda lliain microffibr i atal plâu rhag setlo, ac ystyriwch gynyddu’r lleithder tu mewn i wneud yr amgylchedd yn llai deniadol i widdon pry cop.
Problems caused by hot weather
Hot, dry summer weather accelerates the life cycles of indoor pests, allowing them to multiply rapidly. The most prevalent summer houseplant pests include spider mites, thrips and mealybugs.
How to identify common pests
Spider Mites: These tiny arachnids thrive in hot, dry air. Look for fine webbing between leaves and a speckled, faded appearance on the foliage.
Thrips: These extremely fast, tiny insects pierce leaves to suck sap, causing dull, silvery, or stippled leaves and distorted new growth.
Mealybugs: These appear as white, fluffy cotton-like clumps, often hiding in leaf axils and along stems. They excrete a sticky substance called “honeydew,” which can lead to sooty mould.
Solutions
Immediately isolate any infested plant to prevent the pests from spreading to your healthy collection.
Targeted Treatments
Spider Mites: Wipe down the undersides of leaves with a damp cloth and apply insecticidal soap or diluted neem oil.
Mealybugs: Dip a cotton swab in rubbing alcohol and dab it directly onto the bugs.
Thrips: Thoroughly spray the entire plant with lukewarm water to wash away adult thrips and larvae.
Preventative Care
Check plant leaves and undersides weekly. Wipe off dust with a microfiber cloth to deter pests from settling, and consider boosting indoor humidity to make the environment less appealing to spider mites.
