A medium sized deciduous tree with ascending main branches and a rounded crown, bearing dark green, lobed foliage with greyish white hairs on the underside. Dense clusters of fluffy white flowers in spring are replaced by large, round, scarlet red berries which provide a feast for wild birds in the autumn. Received the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit.

Grow in moderately fertile, humus-rich, well-drained soil in full sun or light shade. Hardy and tolerant of urban pollution and coastal conditions.
